Tabernaemontana (Apocynaceae)

Location: Tropical and Warm Regions of the World

Sanango is an interesting looking plant. They grow as bushy shrubs and can climb. They are sometimes referred to as small treets and are abundant in the amazon and rainforest zones. Although the plants can grow up to 15 feet tall, the real highlight are the gigantic red, pink, pale or flesh-colored fruit that bloom. Sometimes the fruit of the plant are confused with animal testes (the testicles of a mammal).

The Tabernaemontana plant has been used for its psychoactive properties as an additive for the hallucinogenic drink, Ayahuasca. Primarily, it is used for its constituents which are able to enhance the visions and dreams had while on other hallucinogens. Ibogaine and voacangine have been isolated in the plant.
