Iboga Dogbane of Africa

Tabernanthe Vision-Inducing Herb

tabernanthe-iboga

Aka Tabernanthe iboga Baill.

Location: Africa, Particularly Tropical Regions

Iboga is an ugly weed-like plant that can grow as tall as five feet. It is an abundant rainforest shrubbery in the African tropics. Although the plant is primarily green from the overgrowth of leaf foliage, there are also sprouts of white, yellow or pinkish flowers, which are typically spotted one of the same three colors. There are also small fruits which are yellow or orange in color and grow in pairs.

Tabernanthe is frequently cultivated for its religious and vision giving uses. Ibogaine has been found, among other alkaloids, which are responsible for these intense visions. Unfortunately, Iboga is fatal in large doses, often killing people who overdose by paralysis.
