Pituri Bush – Australian Hallucinogen

Duboisia of the Nightshade Family

duboisia-hopwoodii

Aka Duboisia hopwoodii

Location: Australia (Primarily Central Australia)

Technically Duboisia is an evergreen shrub, but it can grow up to 9 feet in height. The wood of this plant has a yellowish color and the scent is similar to vanilla. Duboisia sprouts beautiful, bell-shaped, white flowers, sometimes with rose colored speckles.

Pituri is psychoactive and has many uses, however, the two most notable ways of using Pituri Bush are for recreation or for ritual. After being hung and dried, the leaves can be chewed or smoked to provide a powerful stimulating effect. Pituri Bush literally provides nicotine, simply not from tobacco. The hallucinogenic tropane alkaloids are present in the roots (hyoscyamine and scopolamine).
