Mescal Bean – Hallucinogen and Intoxicant

Sophora of the Pea Family

sophora-secundiflora

Aka Sophora secundiflora

Location: Southwestern United States and Mexico

Sophora is a gorgeous shrub (though growing taller much more like a tree) with beautiful violet-to-purple flowers that droop and measure 4 inches long. The plant is fragrant and can grow up to 35 feet in height. The leaves are evergreen and glossy, providing adequate bush to compensate for the vibrant floral bloom they support.

There are many reports of tribes and recreational users enjoying the employment of Sophora secundiflora. Some report hallucinations, possibly from the cytisine present in the beans of the plant. Others have used the beans and plant to make an intoxicating concoction.
