Mushroom of Awareness

Agaricaceae Conocybe Mushrooms (Agaric Family)

identifying the mushroom of awareness in the wild

Aka Conocybe siligineoides Heim (Bolbitiaceae)

Location: Primarily Mexico and the United States

The Agaricaceae mushrooms of the Agaric family are gorgeous even though they stand only 3 inches tall. They typically grow on rotting wood and can have a cap size as large as 1 inch in diameter. The cap is typically a deep orange color, getting darker closer to the top. Conocybe siligineoides is one of the few mushrooms regarded sacred throughout Mexico. Some natives of Mexico know this plant as the Mushroom of Awareness, particularly the cult of Tamu.

The Conocybe mushrooms have been culturally used for their intoxicating effects. Many of the species contain psilocybine, which are then used in a number of shamanism rituals, religious rituals, and even for recreational hallucinogenic exploration.
