Hallucinogenic Mushrooms of Mexico: Panaeolus

Location: Mexico, Central America, Northern Parts of South America

Panaeolus mushrooms are very common throughout Mexico and Central America, and they grow in patches. The mushrooms have long, droopy looks, almost like a closing umbrella. They are light brown, yellowish, white, or creme colored. They have been employed by the Mazatec and Chimantec Indians of Mexico as a hallucinogen and to make an intoxicating drink. The mushrooms, like many other hallucinogenic ‘shrooms’, grow on cow dung. They also grow in open fields, forests and along the sides of roads.

It is important to note that many species of this mushroom exist, and varieties of the same species which have just slightly different chemical structures. It can be hard to find the exact right Hoop-petticoat that has psychoactive properties…as most of them are not psychoactive at all!
