There are many varieties of Psilocybe mushrooms. Of the many varieties, some are more effective when it comes to inducing hallucinogenic effects. Here are the respective species of Psilocybe mushrooms with their regarded uses and differences:

psilocybe-cubensisPsilocybe cubensis (aka San Isidro) – A well-known hallucinogen used by some shamans of the Mazatec tribe of ancient and modern times. It is one of the most common mushrooms used for recreational enjoyment. The mushroom caps themselves are small, stout, smooth in top (almost like looking down on the top of a hot air balloon). They are typically green, yellow, or whitish in color. Psilocybe cubensis contain generous quantities of psilocybine.

psilocybe-cyanescensPsilocybe cyanescens (aka Wavy Cap) – As its name would describe, the mushroom caps of this Psilocybe are wavy and distraught. These mushrooms resemble an umbrella, if it were torn upward and inside out in violent winds. The caps are a light brown or tan color, with some grays or dark brown spotting. It used to be referred to as Hyphaloma cyanescens in older texts and psychoactive literature. Usually it only takes consuming about 1 grams of the dried mushroom in order to induce visual hallucinations. Psilocybine, psilocine and baeocystine are found within the tryptamine content of Psilocybe cyanescens.

psilocybe-mexicanaPsilocybe mexicana (aka Teonanacatl) – There are many tribes and recreational users which employ this species of Psilocybe. The mushroom itself has a darker, gray or brownish stem and they can attain a height of 4 inches tall (still being one of the smallest of the psychedelic mushrooms). The caps are a darker brown color, as though they have been lightly toasted. They are shamed like craters were extracted from the Earth and rest atop a large stem.

psilocybe-semilanceataPsilocybe semilanceata (aka Liberty Cap) – These are strange looking mushrooms, growing in a lanky fashion, the stems being gray and almost translucent. The caps are small, usually only about an inch wide and almost alien looking. They are white and generally feel damp. There are extremely high concentrations of psilocybine and psilocine, as well as a little baeocystine in the Psilocybe semilanceata species.
