Cumala Tree of the Tropical Amazon

Virola Aubl. (Nutmeg Family)

virola-theiodora

Aka Virola theiodora

Location: Warm and Tropical Temperatures of Central and South America

Virola theiodora is a rather tall tree, though still slender in structure. It can reach heights of up to 75 feet tall, though smaller species can be just 25 feet in height. It is native to the Amazon and the trunk is typically only 1-2 feet in diameter, which is incredibly thin for the height of the tree. Long, glossy, oblong-shaped leaves decorate thin, sleek branches. Golden-yellow or brownish colored flowers speckle the ends of the branches.

Virola creates a special resin that is red in color from the inner bark. The resin is traditionally manufactured into a snuff that is hallucinogenic. Sometimes the resin is turned into small pellets instead. This resin has been confirmed to contain both DMT and 5-MeO-DMT.
