How to Prepare Psychedelic Mushrooms: A Traditional Guide

How to Prepare Psychedelic Mushrooms Like The Native Americans

Are Psychedelic Mushrooms Still Prepared Traditionally?

Psychedelic mushrooms are probably one of the most abundantly available plants on the face of the planet. They grow all over the world, and each region has their own version of the “magic mushroom.” Therefore, it is also common for each culture to have their own preferred preparation methods. This preparation method is most typically found in Native American, Mexican and South American cultures, as the primary mushrooms used in these recipes are native to those regions. Most preparations would arguably work for nearly any magic mushroom type though, to varying degrees of effectiveness. Please remember that magic mushrooms contain the powerful psychoactive compounds Psilocybin and Psilocin (among others), and that these substances are highly hallucinogenic and often vision-inducing.

Guide for Preparing Psychedelic Mushrooms Traditionally

Although these traditional preparations are most widely used in the Americas, no recipe is set in stone. This traditional guide can be slightly altered, changed to match any type of magic mushroom and tweaked to produce higher quality preparations with the right experience and practice.

Start the Pot

Place a pot large enough for 2 cups of water per desired resulting serving onto the stove. In other words, if only one serving is desired, only 2 cups of water will be in the pot. Grind the mushrooms and add them to the pot. Traditionally, about an eighth to a quarter of an ounce worth of magic mushrooms are required for a single serving. Grinding the mushrooms (or finely chopping them) will increase the surface area and make for a better extraction.

Aromatic and “Bonus” Additives

This is the last chance to add any aromatic or bonus additives to the concoction. Be careful what to add, as many things can be harmful to the formula. There are some things which are well-known additives, especially in traditional recipes; and these plants provide actual benefit to the resulting beverage as well. The first is ginger root, the fresher the better. Having a nice ginger root in the mix can help calm the stomach and help it cope a little better with the psychoactives. Another common traditional additive is lemon or orange (any citrus really). Just a single squeeze from a fresh citrus fruit will add acidity (good for this drink) and some natural flavoring. Natural flavoring is helpful for a drink made of mushrooms. Finally, Damiana is a very common (and popular) additive, as it brings a soothing, relaxing effect to the drink. It is also sweet tasting and aromatic in scent. Damiana is psychoactive in itself and can also be used by itself. Edge77 sells some of the highest quality Damiana available.

Boil the Mixture

Bring the pot to a boil and leave it boiling for 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, turn the heat off and remove the pot from the direct heat, allowing it to cool on the side. It does not take long to create the extraction. It is important to allow the mixture to cool naturally, as the heat continues to aid in the extraction process.

Repeat the Extraction

After the solution has cooled, filter out the herbage, keeping the resulting liquid in a separate container. Place the herbage (the mushrooms, and any other plant matter or ingredients included in the recipe) back into the pot and add 1 cup of water. Bring the mixture back up to a boil and allow it to boil for 60 more seconds before turning the heat off and removing the pot from the heat source. After the pot has cooled, filter the herbage and plant matter (mushrooms included) out of the liquid and dispose of the plant matter, again keeping only the resulting liquid.

Finish the Magic Mushroom Tea

Combine the resulting liquid with the original resulting liquid and shake thoroughly. This liquid now contains the extracted Psilocybin and Psilocin. It is traditionally consumed all at once rather quickly (within 20 minutes).

Natural Sweetener (optional)

An optional traditional step after the tea has been created is to add honey to the tea to sweeten it. Honey does not create any problems or complications with the psychoactive substances. The amount of honey would be per taste and preference.

Last Notes from the Shaman: Tripping on Psychedelic Mushrooms

There are other preparations for psychedelic mushrooms which exist throughout the world. Depending upon the type of mushroom and the region, the traditional preparations may vary very significantly. There are also mental preparations which are typically suggested in order to get the most out of the experience, and avoid having any unwanted side effects. Most of these preparations involve going into the experience with a calm, positive mind and outlook in life. It is also important to maintain good nutrition and a healthy diet for several weeks beforehand to avoid any other substances disturbing the experience.
